Beginner Shopping List

Everything you need to bring home a happy, healthy chinchilla.

New to chinchillas? This list covers the essentials — safe housing, food, hydration, hygiene, and enrichment. No confusing gimmicks, no unsafe pet-store add-ons. Just the basics that keep your fluffy friend healthy from day one.

✅ Housing

✔ A safe, multi-level chinchilla cage
✔ Solid wood or fleece-covered shelves (no plastic)
✔ Fleece bedding + washable puppy pad
✔ Safe hideout (wood or ceramic — not plastic/fabric)
✔ Hay rack or litter-free hay area

Avoid pet-store cage starter kits — they’re almost always too small or too flimsy.

✅ Food & Water

✔ Plain chinchilla pellets (no seeds, fruit, colored bits)
✔ Orchard or timothy hay — unlimited, every day
✔ Glass water bottle with stainless steel tube
✔ Ceramic food bowl (won’t tip, won’t be chewed)

Never add supplements, treats, or flavoring to water.

✅ Dust Bath Supplies

✔ Chinchilla bathing dust (NOT sand)
✔ Dust bowl or covered bath container
✔ Offered 2–4 times per week depending on coat

✅ Chews & Toys

✔ Apple sticks or willow sticks
✔ Timothy braids, loofah chews
✔ Bamboo finger traps (supervised, replace when frayed)
✔ Wooden blocks or ledges
✔ Forage sprinkles or herb blends (as tiny enrichment)

Wood chewing is a MUST — chinchilla teeth grow for life.

✅ Hideouts & Resting Spots

✔ Wooden hideout in a quiet corner
✔ Stone or granite tile for cooling
✔ One hide per chin (more if paired)

✅ Safe Exercise

✔ 15–18 inch solid-surface exercise wheel
– No mesh, bars, or plastic
– No enclosed balls or “hamster balls”

✅ Health & Cleaning Essentials

✔ Small animal vacuum or hand broom
✔ Unscented detergent for washing fleece
✔ Spare fleece liners (always good to rotate)
✔ Exotic vet contact info saved in your phone

✅ Optional, But Helpful

✔ Litter box + dust-free paper pellet litter
✔ Travel carrier
✔ Digital thermometer for room temp
✔ Pet camera (great for keeping an eye on behavior)

✅ What You Don’t Need

✘ Plastic cages or accessories
✘ Seed or fruit mixes
✘ Cat litter or cedar shavings
✘ Treat sticks with honey or molasses
✘ Exercise balls
✘ Harnesses or leashes
✘ Scented bedding or candles near cage

If a product is marketed toward hamsters, gerbils, rats, or guinea pigs, it’s usually not chinchilla-safe.
