✅ Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common chinchilla questions, care tips, and sprinkle safety.

✅ Are your sprinkles safe for chinchillas?

Yes. Every sprinkle is made from clean, minimal ingredients that are chin-safe when used in tiny amounts. No sugar, no dried fruit, no fillers, and no artificial colors.
If we wouldn’t give it to our own chins, we won’t offer it to yours.

✅ Do sprinkles replace treats or pellets?

No. Sprinkles are enrichment toppers — not treats and not a diet substitute.
Chinchillas should always have:
✔ unlimited hay
✔ a small amount of quality pellets
✔ fresh water
Sprinkles are just a tiny, occasional addition.

✅ How much should I give?

Every blend has its own serving suggestion, but in general:
    •    Just a pinch
    •    2–3 times per week or less
    •    Happy Belly Blend is only for occasional tummy support every 1–2 months
    •    Honey Dust is potent, so a micro-sprinkle only

When in doubt, use less and go slowly.

✅ Can I give multiple sprinkles on the same day?

It’s best to stick to one sprinkle type per day and skip sugary treats on sprinkle days.

✅ My chin is new and nervous. Can sprinkles help?

Yes! Sprinkles can be:
✔ a bonding tool
✔ a way to encourage appetite
✔ a gentle enrichment option
Just start with tiny amounts and let your chin explore the scent and taste at their own pace.

✅ What if my chin has soft stool or diarrhea?

Stop all sprinkles immediately and contact an exotic veterinarian.
Soft stool can be a sign of:
    •    stress
    •    sugary treats
    •    diet changes
    •    dental issues
    •    early GI upset

Chinchillas can decline quickly, so when in doubt, call a vet.

✅ Do you ship internationally?

Not Yet But we hope to in the future, so currently U.S. Only

✅ Can I refrigerate or freeze your blends?

Yes. Blends containing flax or wheat germ should be kept refrigerated or frozen to stay fresh. Other blends can be stored airtight in a cool, dry place.

✅ Are these vet-approved?

They are made from ingredients commonly used safely in chinchilla homes and rescues, and we keep amounts tiny because chins are sensitive.
They are not a medical treatment.
Always contact an exotics veterinarian for illness, injury, or sudden behavior changes.

✅ Do you breed chinchillas?

Right now, our focus is education, wellness, and safe supplies.
Breeding may be possible in the future, but only responsibly and thoughtfully. Our chins are family first, always.

✅ What makes your sprinkles different?
    •    Small batch
    •    No sugar or junk ingredients
    •    Transparency and education
    •    Created from real-world chin care experience
    •    Inspired by Pippin and tested with love (and supervision)

✅ What do chinchillas need in their diet?

A healthy chinchilla diet is:
    •    80–90% hay (timothy, orchard, or meadow hay)
    •    A small portion of high-quality pellets
    •    Fresh, clean water daily
    •    Occasional safe enrichment like herbs or sprinkles

No fruits, dried fruits, seeds, nuts, or sugary treats — those can upset their stomach and teeth.

✅ Why can’t chinchillas have sugary treats?

Chinchilla digestive systems are extremely sensitive.
Sugar (even natural sugar from raisins or apples) can cause:

❌ gas
❌ diarrhea
❌ painful bloating
❌ long-term dental issues
❌ dangerous gut imbalance

That’s why our sprinkles avoid fruit, sugar, and sticky ingredients.

✅ Do chinchillas need dust baths?

Yes!
Chinchillas should have a dust bath 2–4 times per week.
Dust keeps their fur clean, fluffy, and oil-free — water baths are dangerous and can cause fungus or illness.

✅ Can chinchillas live alone or in pairs?

Chins can live alone, but many enjoy a companion.
However, bonding must be done carefully — chins can fight or injure each other if rushed. Never introduce without proper supervision and neutral territory. Some chins are perfectly happy solo (Pippin included!).

✅ What temperature is safe for chinchillas?

Chins overheat easily.
Ideal temperature: 60–70°F (15–21°C)
Avoid temps above 75°F and watch humidity — heat stress can be fatal.

✅ Why does my chin sleep during the day?

Chinchillas are crepuscular — most active at dawn and dusk.
They nap during the day, play and explore at night.
A chin who seems “quiet” in the morning may get bouncy after sunset!

✅ My chin isn’t eating — what do I do?

Stop all treats and sprinkles and contact an exotic vet immediately.
Lack of appetite can be a sign of:
    •    dental pain
    •    GI stasis
    •    stress
    •    illness
Chins go downhill fast if they stop eating — it’s always an emergency.

✅ What toys are safe?

Safe options:
    •    pumice stone
    •    untreated wood (pine, apple, manzanita, kiln-dried)
    •    timothy twists
    •    cardboard (plain)
    •    loofah
    •    safe hay-based chews

Unsafe things:
❌ plastic
❌ flavored wood
❌ fabric
❌ rope
❌ soft woods
Plastic is especially risky because chins can chew pieces off and swallow them.

✅ Do chinchillas need veterinary care?

Yes — chins require an exotics veterinarian, not a regular cat-dog vet.
Routine checkups help catch dental disease, respiratory issues, and weight changes early.

✅ How long do chinchillas live?

With good care, many live 10–20 years, and some even longer. They are a long-term commitment and deserve stable, loving homes.

✅ Why do chinchillas chew everything?

Their teeth grow constantly.
They must chew to keep their teeth trimmed and healthy.
This is why safe wood and hay are so important.
