| ✅ Chinchilla Housing & Setup
Safe, happy homes for tiny explorers ![]() Chinchillas are active, athletic, and curious — they need a living space that feels like a playground, a hideout, and a cozy bedroom all in one. Whether you’re setting up your first cage or upgrading to a larger one, here’s everything your chin needs for a safe and enriching home. ⸻ ✅ Cage Size Chinchillas are built to jump and climb, not sit still. A proper chinchilla cage should be: • Tall, multi-level, and safe for hopping • Wire bar spacing ½ inch or smaller (to prevent escapes and stuck heads) • Solid floors or fleece-covered surfaces (no exposed wire flooring) Minimum size: • 24” x 24” x 36” (for one chin) Preferred size: • Larger multi-level cages like Ferret Nation, Critter Nation, or custom setups Bigger is always better — as long as everything inside is safe. ⸻ ✅ Safe Cage Flooring Chinchilla feet are delicate. Avoid exposed wire floors — they can cause sores, injuries, and foot problems. Best options: ✔ fleece cage liners ✔ tile, wood, or metal pans ✔ mats made for small animals (no carpet fibers) Avoid: ✘ loose shavings (can cause dust & mouth injuries) ✘ cedar or pine bedding ✘ plastic flooring (chew hazard) ⸻ ✅ Platforms and Levels Chins love climbing. Use shelves, ramps, and perches made of: • Kiln-dried pine • Aspen • Untreated hardwoods Make sure shelves are: ✔ secure ✔ not too high ✔ spaced so jumps are safe and controlled ⸻ ✅ Hideouts & Hammocks Chinchillas are prey animals — hiding makes them feel safe. Great options: ✔ fleece huts ✔ wooden hideouts ✔ fleece tunnels ✔ cuddle cups Avoid: ✘ hanging huts with loose strings ✘ fabric with long threads they can chew ⸻ ✅ Food & Water Placement Keep everything low and easy to access: • Hay rack near a perch • Pellet bowl on a flat surface • Water bottle mounted at comfortable height Avoid bowls of water — chins love spilling. ⸻ ✅ Chews & Enrichment A chin’s teeth never stop growing. Chewing = health + enrichment + stress relief. Safe chew items: ✔ apple sticks ✔ pumice stone ✔ kiln-dried pine ✔ hanging wooden toys ✔ cardboard tubes Rotate toys weekly to keep life exciting. ⸻ ✅ Dust Baths Chinchillas don’t bathe in water — they bathe in dust! Offer a dust bath: • 2–4 times per week • 5–10 minutes at a time • Remove afterward to protect lungs and eyes Do NOT leave dust baths in the cage 24/7. ⸻ ✅ Temperature & Humidity Chinchillas overheat easily. Ideal: ✔ 60–70°F (15–21°C) ✔ Low humidity — under 50% Avoid: ✘ outdoor cages ✘ garages ✘ basements ✘ rooms with scented candles or oils A cool, quiet room is their happy place. ⸻ ✅ Playtime If your chin enjoys playtime: • always use a secure, escape-proof area • block off wires, doors, and furniture • supervise 100% of the time Some chins love it. Some prefer staying in their cage. Both are normal. ⸻ ✅ Sick or Nervous Chinchillas New rescues or recovering chins may need: • smaller temporary setups • no high perches • less stimulation • no playtime until healthy Healing first — adventure later. ⸻ ✅ Quick Checklist ✔ multi-level, safe cage ✔ fleece or solid flooring ✔ hideout + hammock or fleece house ✔ hay rack + pellet bowl + water bottle ✔ safe chew toys ✔ dust bath a few times weekly ✔ cool, low-humidity room ✔ NO plastic, wires, or unsafe bedding |
